In short

IndexNow is an open protocol that lets you notify participating search engines the moment a URL is added, updated or deleted, instead of waiting for them to recrawl. You host a key file at your domain root and send the changed URLs to an IndexNow endpoint; the receiving engine shares the ping with the others. Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver participate. Google does not: it ran a test and has not adopted the protocol, so IndexNow speeds up Bing discovery, never Google.

Which search engines actually use IndexNow

The honest version. IndexNow is genuinely useful, but only for the engines that participate.

How the IndexNow protocol actually works

IndexNow is deliberately small. You generate a key, a hexadecimal string, and publish it as a plain text file at the root of your domain whose filename is the key itself and whose contents are the same key. That file is how the receiving engine proves the ping came from someone who controls the site. From then on, whenever a URL is created, updated or removed, you send it to an IndexNow endpoint along with the key and the key file location. The engine that receives it shares the notification with the other participating engines, so one submission covers all of them.

The practical value is the change from pull to push. Normally a search engine finds your update whenever its own crawl schedule brings it back around, which on a low-authority site can be weeks. With IndexNow, you tell it the second the change happens. It does not make the engine index the page, and nothing about the protocol overrides a quality judgment or a noindex directive. What it removes is the discovery delay, which on frequently updated catalogs, listings and news sites is the bottleneck that actually matters.

  • Generate a key and host it as a text file at your domain root, named after the key.
  • Submit changed URLs to an IndexNow endpoint, one at a time or in batches.
  • One submission is shared across all participating engines.
  • Submit on genuine change only; spamming the same URLs does not help and wastes quota.
  • IndexNow speeds discovery. It does not force indexing, and no honest tool claims it does.

Does Google use IndexNow, and what to do instead

This is the question that brings most people to the topic, and the answer has not changed: no. Google confirmed it would test IndexNow as part of its work on crawl efficiency and sustainability, and that test has never turned into adoption. Any tool implying that an IndexNow ping tells Google about your page is either confused or hoping you are. Treat IndexNow as a Bing-family channel and plan your Google strategy separately.

For Google, the official routes are the ones worth your effort. XML sitemaps remain the primary way to declare the URL set you want crawled, and keeping them clean matters more than most teams think. The Google Indexing API exists but is officially limited to JobPosting pages and BroadcastEvent markup inside VideoObject, with a default quota of 200 publish requests per day per project, so it is not a general-purpose submission channel however many tools imply otherwise. Beyond that, discovery comes down to internal linking and crawl priority. The sensible setup is both: IndexNow for instant Bing coverage, and sitemaps plus solid internal linking for Google, with coverage verified afterwards rather than assumed.

  • Google tested IndexNow and has not adopted it. Nothing you submit there reaches Google.
  • For Google, use clean XML sitemaps and strong internal linking as the primary channels.
  • The Google Indexing API is officially limited to JobPosting and BroadcastEvent content.
  • Run both channels in parallel and verify indexed status afterwards on each engine.

The protocol allows batch submissions of up to 10,000 URLs per request, and engines apply their own fair-use limits on top. The real constraint is not the cap but the intent: submit URLs when they genuinely change. Resubmitting an unchanged set repeatedly gains nothing and can get your submissions deprioritized.
No, and any tool that says otherwise is misleading you. IndexNow tells a search engine that a URL changed so it can crawl sooner. Whether the page is then indexed depends on the engine's own assessment of quality, duplication and your directives. It removes the waiting, not the judgment.
